Birds and the Adaptation to their Environment.

The adaptability of birds has become very diverse and has enabled them to survive in various habitats on earth. These adaptations entail physical characteristics, behaviors and feeding patterns which they have to adapt to their environments.

The shape of the beaks is one of the most significant adaptations of birds. There are varying types of beaks among different species of birds based on the diet. An example is that birds which feed on seeds often have short and sturdy beaks and birds which feed on nectar have long and slender beaks.

The other significant change is wings. The wings of a bird dictate the flight of that bird depending on its size and shape. There are also birds with long wings that enable them to glide and cover a long distance whereas others have shorter wings to enable rapid movements.

Another significant factor in adaptation is the feathers. Thick feathers help to keep warm in cold environments by birds. Warmer areas could cause birds to have lighter feathers in order to keep cool.

The behavior of birds is also an adaptation. Migration is a natural activity through which the birds fly long distances to seek food or favorable weather conditions. This assists them to withstand fluctuations in seasons and keep away the adverse weather conditions.

Another survival mechanism is camouflage. There are also birds which are colored and patterned to fit their surrounding so that they are not noticed by predators. Bright colors can be used by other species to signal danger, or to attract a mate.

The feeding behaviors of birds change according to available resources also. There are those species which are capable of altering their food intake according to the season of the year, whereas there are those which save up on food and utilize it later.

Another adaptive behaviour is nesting. Birds nest in secure areas to enable them to keep their eggs and young ones safe. Various species have dissimilar materials and methods taking up their nests.

Adaptations aid birds to survive and flourish in a diverse habitat. Birds are still evolving and adapting to new conditions whether in forests, oceans or the deserts.

All in all, the capability of birds to adapt is among the factors that enable them to be found in virtually all corners of the world, thus being one of the most successful numbers of animals.
